Beschrijving voorzijde Duke Ulrich depicted in full plate armor and plumed helmet, mounted on a horse striding left; the date appears in the exergue beneath the horse. The entire equestrian composition is enclosed within an elaborately ornamented circle. The surrounding legend in Latin identifies the issuer by name and title. The bold, Renaissance-style engraving reflects the courtly artistic conventions of early sixteenth-century German coinage.

Aanvullende informatie

Ulrich of Württemberg was nineteen years old when this thaler was struck, already notorious for a violent temper that would define — and nearly destroy — his reign. The coin dates to just two years before he murdered Hans von Hutten in 1515, an act that scandalized the Empire and set in motion the chain of events that would eventually cost him his duchy entirely. Württemberg was expelled from the Swabian League in 1519, and Ulrich fled into exile after a military rout that lasted under two weeks.

This is among the earliest thalers issued by Württemberg, predating the political catastrophes by less than a decade.
