Sigismund von Schrattenbach ruled Salzburg from 1753 until his death in 1771, and his tenure is remembered less for politics than for music — he was Leopold Mozart's employer and the young Wolfgang's first significant patron, tolerating the family's extended absences for concert tours across Europe with unusual generosity. These thalers were struck throughout the middle years of that relationship, when the Mozart household was still in good standing at the Salzburg court.
