Obverse description Central field dominated by the imperial eagle of Frankfurt, displayed with wings spread and head turned to the right, surmounted by a small crown above the head. The eagle, rendered in the bold relief characteristic of late 16th-century hammered coinage, bears the city's orb on its breast. The entire device is encircled by a wreath of laurel or oak branches, within which runs the Latin circumferential legend RESPVBLICA FRANCOFVRTENSIS.
