Aanvullende informatie

Magdeburg's 1622 Schautaler was struck in the opening years of the Thirty Years' War, when the city was navigating an increasingly precarious position between Protestant alliance and Imperial pressure. The term Schautaler — literally "show thaler" — indicates this was produced for presentation rather than circulation, likely as a diplomatic gift or municipal display piece rather than a spending coin. That distinction matters here: Magdeburg would be catastrophically sacked by Imperial and League forces in May 1631, an event so devastating it generated the German verb *magdeburgisieren* to describe total urban destruction.
