Rudolf II moved his imperial court from Vienna to Prague in 1583, making Bohemia the administrative heart of the Habsburg empire for nearly three decades. The Kuttenberg mint — Kutná Hora in Czech — had been one of Central Europe's most productive silver sources since the 13th century, its output underpinning Bohemian economic power long before the Habsburgs arrived. By Rudolf's reign the seams were thinning, but the mint remained operational on prestige as much as productivity.
