| Obverse description | Draped and armored bust of Emperor Rudolf II facing right, wearing a ruffled collar, rendered in high relief in the late Renaissance style. The emperor is depicted with a short beard and naturalistic facial features characteristic of the Kuttenberg mint's output. A small Bohemian lion device with three pellets appears in the lower field beneath the bust. The encircling Latin legend runs clockwise along the inner edge of the raised rim. |

Rudolf II moved his imperial court from Vienna to Prague in 1583, making Bohemia the administrative heart of the Habsburg empire for nearly three decades. The Kuttenberg mint — Kutná Hora in Czech — had been one of Central Europe's most productive silver sources since the 13th century, its output underpinning Bohemian economic power long before the Habsburgs arrived. By Rudolf's reign the seams were thinning, but the mint remained operational on prestige as much as productivity.
Rudolf's chronic financial difficulties with the Ottoman frontier and his deteriorating relationship with his brother Matthias both put pressure on silver coinage throughout this date range. The 24-year span of this type means die characteristics vary considerably across the issue.
