Obverse description Broad armored bust of Emperor Rudolf II facing right, wearing a ruffled collar and elaborately decorated plate armor. The emperor is depicted with a short beard and pronounced features in the Renaissance portrait tradition. A circular Latin legend surrounds the effigy reading RUDOLPHUS II D G RIS AG H BOH REX, identifying him as Holy Roman Emperor and King of Hungary and Bohemia. The field is flat with fine hand-engraved detail characteristic of Joachimsthal hammered coinage of the period.
