The Landgraviate of Upper Alsace was administered through the Habsburg inner-Austrian line, and its minting rights were exercised sporadically, which accounts for the relatively narrow die-variety spread documented across the Klemm references 176 through 180. The year 1612 also saw Matthias formally elected Holy Roman Emperor, creating administrative pressure to retire Rudolf's coinage types quickly.
