Obverse description Laureate and armored bust of Emperor Rudolf II facing right, wearing an elaborate ruffled collar and richly decorated pauldrons, with a flowing beard rendered in fine detail. The date appears in two parts flanking the lower portion of the bust within the field. The encircling Latin legend reads RVDOLPHVS II D G RO IM SE AV GER HVN BOH REX, identifying the emperor by name and his titles as Holy Roman Emperor, King of Germany, Hungary, and Bohemia. The portrait is executed in the high-relief hammered style characteristic of late sixteenth- and early seventeenth-century Habsburg coinage. A beaded inner border separates the legend from the central effigy.
