Rudolf II's authority over Upper Alsace was administered through the Habsburg provincial structure, and thalers issued in his name from the Ensisheim mint served a regional economy increasingly strained by the confessional tensions that would erupt into the Thirty Years' War just nine years after this issue closed. Rudolf himself was effectively stripped of his Bohemian and Austrian lands by his brother Matthias through the Ohnmütz agreement of 1608 — the precise year this coinage began — making these provincial thalers contemporaneous with his political unraveling.
The KLEM range of 121–135 reflects meaningful die variation across the two-year run at Ensisheim.
