Rudolf II held the Landgraviate of Upper Alsace as part of the sprawling Habsburg hereditary lands, but his effective authority there was perpetually complicated by the competing jurisdictions of the Habsburgs' Further Austrian territories and the increasingly restive Alsatian estates. These thalers were struck at Ensisheim, the administrative capital of Further Austria in the region, during a period when Rudolf's grip on his own court at Prague was deteriorating badly — his brothers were already maneuvering to strip him of his crowns, a process that would culminate in the Ohnmacht of 1606.
