Corvey, originally founded as a Carolingian Benedictine house in 822, held the status of an imperial abbey — answerable directly to the emperor, not to any territorial prince. That independence gave its abbots the right to strike coins, though exercising it in the mid-sixteenth century required navigating the increasingly fractious politics of the Reformation. Reinhard II of Buchholz governed during precisely that turbulence, and his thalers belong to a narrow window of active minting before Corvey's coinage rights became practically dormant.
