Reverse description The reverse depicts a finely engraved scene of Noah's Ark riding turbulent waves, rendered in detailed relief with the large rectangular superstructure of the Ark prominently centered in the field. A dove carrying an olive branch flies above and to the left of the Ark, symbolizing divine peace, while clouds and rays fill the upper field. A circular Latin legend surrounds the central image, beginning with a fleur-de-lis ornament, and the whole design is framed by a toothed milled border consistent with the obverse. The allegorical imagery of the Ark directly parallels the city of Strasbourg (Argentina) preserved through divine assistance, as stated in the surrounding inscription.

Additional information

Struck to commemorate the Peace of Nijmegen, the series of treaties concluded between 1678 and 1679 that ended the Franco-Dutch War, this thaler was issued at a moment of acute anxiety for Strasbourg. The city had remained a free imperial city throughout the conflict, but Louis XIV's policy of *réunions* — systematic legal annexation of border territories — was already closing in. Within two years of this coin's striking, French forces occupied Strasbourg in September 1681 without a shot fired, ending over a century of imperial municipal autonomy.

The peace this coin celebrates proved, for Strasbourg itself, to be no peace at all.
