正面描述 A panoramic view of the city of Nuremberg fills the central field, rendered in fine detail with towers, spires, and fortifications stretching across the horizon. Above the cityscape, the radiant Eye of God within a triangle emerges from billowing clouds, emitting rays of divine light over the city below. The circumferential Latin legend arcs across the upper portion of the coin. In the lower exergue, an ornate cartouche flanked by laurel branches encloses the Roman numeral date MDCXCVI. The overall composition is characteristic of the high Baroque engraving tradition prevalent in late seventeenth-century German municipal coinage.

附加信息

Issued to commemorate the Peace of Ryswick, concluded in September 1697 — though Nuremberg struck this piece in anticipation, dated 1696, before the treaty was formally signed. The city had endured the economic strain of the Nine Years' War acutely, its trade routes disrupted and its imperial obligations expensive. Free imperial cities like Nuremberg retained the right to strike commemorative thalers as both civic assertion and diplomatic theater.

The Dav CCT 5668 attribution places it firmly within the city's late 17th-century commemorative sequence, a run notable for its unusually high die workmanship relative to municipal issues of comparable period.
