Ragusa — the tiny adriatic republic that managed to stay independent for centuries through careful diplomacy, tribute payments to the Ottoman Empire, and a merchant fleet that kept its coffers solvent — issued the Thaler Novi Vižlin as its principal large silver trade coin. The "Novi" designation distinguished it from earlier thaler types, with this series beginning mid-eighteenth century as Ragusan commerce demanded a coin that could compete in Levantine markets alongside Maria Theresa Thalers and Ottoman piastres.
The republic survived until 1808, when Napoleon simply abolished it by decree during his reorganization of the Adriatic coast.
