Ragusa — modern Dubrovnik — maintained formal independence from the Ottoman Empire through a combination of tribute payments and careful diplomacy, a balancing act that lasted until Napoleon dissolved the republic in 1808. The Thaler Novi Vižlin was introduced partly to facilitate that tributary commerce, with "Novi Vižlin" (literally "new Vižlin") distinguishing it from earlier weight standards that had fallen out of alignment with Ottoman trading expectations.
The .566 fineness placed it below most contemporary European thalers, a deliberate choice reflecting Ragusan monetary pragmatism rather than debasement — the republic had long pegged its coinage to actual commercial utility in the Adriatic and Balkan trades.
