Moritz of Saxony struck these thalers in the immediate aftermath of the Schmalkaldic War, during which he had sided with Emperor Charles V against the Protestant Schmalkaldic League — betraying his own cousin John Frederick I, who held the Electoral dignity. The gamble paid off: by the terms of the Wittenberg Capitulation in May 1547, Charles transferred the Saxon Electorate from the Ernestine to the Albertinian line, making Moritz Elector. These thalers are among the first coins he issued under that new title, minted while the political settlement was barely cold.
