Apafi ruled Transylvania as an Ottoman vassal after being installed by Grand Vizier Köprülü Ahmed Pasha in 1661 — chosen precisely because he was considered politically harmless. He proved more durable than his patrons expected, outlasting multiple grand viziers and navigating the catastrophic Ottoman defeat at Vienna in 1683 with his principality nominally intact.
