| Reverse description | Crowned quartered coat of arms of Transylvania displayed within an ornate baroque cartouche, featuring the eagle of the Principality, the seven castles of Transylvania, the sun and moon of the Székelys, and additional heraldic charges. The shield is surmounted by a royal crown and flanked by decorative foliate scrollwork. The date 1666 appears in the upper field flanking the crown. A continuous Latin legend encircles the design within a beaded border, recording the prince's titles. |

Mihály Apafi ruled Transylvania as an Ottoman-installed prince from 1661, placed on the throne after the disastrous Battle of Szászfenes effectively ended his predecessor's hold on power. His reign was defined by careful navigation between Habsburg pressure from the west and Ottoman suzerainty from the south — a balancing act that required projecting credibility he often lacked militarily. Thalers of this type were among the principal instruments of that projection.
The 1666 date falls squarely in the early consolidation of his rule, before the political turbulence of the 1680s forced Transylvania increasingly into Habsburg orbit.
