Kuttenberg — Kutná Hora in Czech — was among the most productive silver mining centers in late medieval Europe, and its mint retained special prestige well into the Habsburg period. Maximilian II, elected King of Bohemia in 1562 and Holy Roman Emperor three years later, held an unusually tolerant position toward Bohemian Protestantism, a calculated stance that kept the fractious Bohemian estates cooperative during his reign. That political balancing act largely unraveled under his son Rudolf II.
The Kutná Hora mint was subordinate to the Bohemian chamber and operated under strict assay controls — the 29-gram taler weight reflects Habsburg standardization efforts following the 1566 Imperial Recess at Augsburg.
