These thalers were struck at the height of Maximilian I's political ascent — he had received the electoral dignity transferred from the Palatinate branch of the Wittelsbachs in 1623, a direct consequence of Frederick V's disastrous acceptance of the Bohemian crown and subsequent defeat at White Mountain in 1620. The coinage of 1624–1626 thus reflects a duchy newly elevated, its ruler freshly confirmed as an Elector of the Empire by the Diet of Regensburg.
Bavaria's mint output during these years was partly funded by the enormous war contributions Maximilian extracted from occupied territories as head of the Catholic League.
