1623 was the year Maximilian I received the electoral dignity transferred from the defeated Frederick V — the "Winter King" — following the Catholic League's decisive victory at White Mountain in 1620. This thaler was struck almost certainly in anticipation of or immediate celebration of that elevation, making it less a routine monetary issue than a deliberate assertion of newly acquired imperial rank. The Bavarian mint at Munich was put to political work that year.
The Dav ST#6083 designation places this among the broader Stangenthaler series, notable for their large flan and relatively consistent die workmanship out of Munich.
