The circumferential legend CLYPEVS OMNIBVS IN TE SPERANTIBVS — 'A shield to all those who trust in Thee' — encircles the central device in Roman capitals, reflecting Maximilian I's deep Marian devotion and his use of the Virgin as dynastic patron.
