Beschrijving keerzijde The Virgin Mary, depicted as the Immaculate Conception, is shown seated facing, wearing a radiate crown and flowing robes, cradling the Christ Child in her arms. Her feet rest upon an inverted crescent moon set above billowing clouds, while a glory of radiating beams surrounds the entire composition in the baroque manner. The devotional Latin legend, drawn from Psalm 18, encircles the design, proclaiming Mary as the shield and protectress of all who place their hope in her. This Marian reverse reflects the strong Counter-Reformation piety of the Bavarian Wittelsbach court under Maximilian I.

Aanvullende informatie

Maximilian I received the Electoral dignity in February 1623 as direct payment for his military and financial support of the Habsburg cause during the opening campaigns of the Thirty Years' War — the transfer of the Palatine Electorate to Bavaria being one of the most consequential political transactions of the century. This thaler was struck almost immediately after that investiture, making it among the earliest issues produced under his new electoral title rather than his ducal one.

The two-year window of production reflects a transitional moment in the Munich mint's output as new dies incorporating the electoral arms were cut and put into rotation.
