附加信息

Max Gandolf von Kuenburg, Archbishop of Salzburg from 1668 to 1687, ruled during a period of intense Counter-Reformation pressure in the region — he was personally responsible for expelling Protestants from the Defereggental in 1684, one of the last forced expulsions of its kind in the Holy Roman Empire. The countermark on this thaler was applied to authorize continued circulation of an earlier host coin under his monetary authority, a common administrative practice when recoinage was impractical.

The Zöttl references 2088.169–2088.170 distinguish between host coin varieties; the countermark itself was applied at Hall, the principal mint serving Salzburg throughout the archbishopric's independent coinage history.
