The Maria Theresia Thaler occupies a peculiar position in monetary history: it never stopped being struck. After Maria Theresia's death in 1780, the Vienna mint froze the date and continued producing coins bearing that year in perpetuity — a practice that continues to this day. The coin circulated as trade currency across the Arabian Peninsula, the Horn of Africa, and the Levant, where merchants trusted its consistent silver content above all local issues.
Arabian traders reportedly refused substitutes, and several European powers — including Britain and France — struck their own imitation thalers during the 19th century to meet demand. Any piece bearing a date within the genuine 1772–1780 window warrants careful authentication.
