Leopold Anton von Firmian became Archbishop of Salzburg in 1727 after a career marked more by political maneuvering than pastoral distinction. His tenure is remembered less for these thalers than for the Salzburger Emigration of 1731–32, when he expelled roughly 20,000 Protestant subjects from the archbishopric under the Edict of Expulsion — one of the largest forced religious migrations in 18th-century Europe. The expelled Salzburgers ultimately settled across Prussia, the Netherlands, and colonial Georgia.
