The hirsute male figure is shown nude except for a leafy loincloth about his waist, holding an uprooted pine tree upright as a staff in his left hand while his right arm rests akimbo at his hip; small tufts of grass indicate the ground beneath his feet. The mint-master's initials I·A·B· are placed in the lower exergue below the figure. The peripheral Latin motto EX ADVERSO DECVS, translating as 'Honour from Adversity,' runs along the upper border, consistent with the traditional Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel reverse type on thalers of this period. |
