Obverse description The entire field is occupied by a ten-line Latin inscription in Renaissance capital lettering, commemorating the discovery of new silver veins at Gladenbach through God's grace, and attributing the issue to Landgrave Ludwig (Louis IV) of Hesse. The legend opens with a cross-flanked ANNO at the top of the field, followed by the Roman numeral date M·D·LXXXVII or M·D·LXXXVIII depending on the striking year, arranged in successive horizontal lines filling the flan. A small cross appears at the foot of the inscription. The coin's entire decorative programme is typographic, with no portraiture or heraldic device on this face, characteristic of Ausbeutetaler issues celebrating mining production.
