| 表面の説明 | Elaborate four-fold quartered coat of arms with a central escutcheon bearing the striped lion of Hesse, the entire shield richly ornamented with Renaissance strapwork and foliate mantling. Three ornate crested helmets rise above the arms, each surmounted by distinctive heraldic crest devices. The encircling Latin legend runs along the outer border of the coin. The composition displays the refined German Renaissance heraldic engraving style typical of mid-sixteenth-century Thaler coinage. |

Louis IV of Hessen-Marburg ruled only a rump territory — the landgraviate had been partitioned in 1567 following Philip the Magnanimous's controversial division of Hesse among his four sons, a decision that fractured one of the most powerful Protestant principalities in the Empire. Louis received Marburg and its surrounding lands, a fragment that would revert to Hessen-Kassel upon his death in 1604 without male heirs. Coinage from Hessen-Marburg is consequently brief in series and narrow in type count.
The Schütz III#490 reference places this among the documented thalers of the partition period, when each successor line asserted independent minting rights almost immediately.
