Louis Anthony of Pfalz-Neuburg served as Grand Master of the Teutonic Order from 1694 — which makes a 1687 thaler struck in his name somewhat anomalous, issued during his tenure as Hoch- und Deutschmeister before his elevation to the top position. The Order by this point was a shadow of its medieval military self, its territorial holdings in Prussia long since lost to secularization, its coinage largely ceremonial and administrative rather than commercial.
Prokisch's cataloguing of this type documents relatively tight die linkages across the 1687 emission, suggesting a limited and controlled striking.
