Leopold I acquired Silesia as part of the Bohemian Crown lands inherited from his father Ferdinand III, but his hold on the region was never administratively comfortable — Breslau retained substantial civic autonomy and its mint operated with considerable independence from Vienna. The Breslau thalers of 1664–65 fall within a period of acute fiscal strain, as the Habsburg treasury was still absorbing the costs of the ongoing Ottoman frontier conflicts and the ruinously expensive War of Devolution looming ahead.
The Dav EC II#3288 attribution places this firmly in the Davenport European Crown series, distinguishing it from the later Herinek-documented varieties that emerged as die production shifted.
