Additional information

Leopold I issued thalers from Breslau — the Silesian mint operating under imperial authority — at a moment when the city's loyalty was still being consolidated following the Thirty Years' War's redistribution of Silesian territories firmly under Habsburg control. The 1663 date places this coin just ahead of the Ottoman crisis that would consume Leopold's attention and treasury for the next two decades.

Davenport EC II#3288 distinguishes this from the main Vienna and Prague issues by the Breslau mintmaster's mark. Silesian thalers of this period circulated heavily into Polish and Bohemian trade networks and rarely survived intact.
