Frankfurt struck this Konventionstaler in the year the city was still reeling from French and then Imperial occupation during the Seven Years' War, which had ended just the previous year. The Konventionsmünzfuß — the treaty-based monetary standard established between Austria and Bavaria in 1753 — was never universally adopted across the Holy Roman Empire, and Frankfurt's adherence to it reflected the city's commercial pragmatism: its great trade fairs demanded a coin that south German and Austrian merchants would accept without dispute.
As a Free Imperial City, Frankfurt answered to the Emperor rather than any territorial prince, giving its mint a peculiar independence that makes attribution of die varieties here more complex than for most contemporary German states.
