Károly Batthyány served as field marshal under Maria Theresa and was granted the right to strike coins — a privilege rarely extended to Hungarian noble families by this period. The 1768 thaler is one of the few Hungarian noble coinages of the 18th century, issued under an authority that was already an anachronism in an era of tightening Habsburg monetary centralization. Production was limited and almost certainly never intended for wide circulation.
