| Beschrijving keerzijde | A springing horse leaping to the left occupies the upper central field, serving as the traditional emblem of Brunswick. The date of issue appears in the exergue or lower field below the horse. To the right stands a wildman holding a tree trunk in his right hand, while in his left he holds a skull, an hourglass, and a pair of spectacles — emblematic vanitas symbols that give the coin its popular name 'Brillentaler' (spectacles thaler). The motto ALIIS INSERVIENDO CONSVMO ('By serving others, I consume myself') encircles the design as the reverse legend, a maxim adopted by Duke Julius. The composition is enclosed within a beaded border. |
