Julius, Duke of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel, began striking thalers in 1568 following his conversion to Lutheranism and his reorganization of the duchy's finances — the two events were not unrelated. Revenue from the Rammelsberg silver mines at Goslar underpinned the coinage, and Julius was aggressive about monetizing that output. He founded the Wolfenbüttel mint specifically to process it.
The 1574 date places this piece mid-series, well before the mint's peak output years of the late 1570s.
