Joseph Conrad von Schroffenberg took the episcopal seat at Freising in 1788, just two years before this thaler was struck. His tenure proved historically terminal: Napoleonic reorganization of German ecclesiastical territories under the 1803 Reichsdeputationshauptschluss abolished the Bishopric of Freising entirely, ending over a millennium of continuous episcopal authority in the region. This coin was minted less than fifteen years before that suppression, making Schroffenberg the last Bishop of Freising to issue coinage.
