John Reinhard I ruled Hanau-Lichtenberg from 1599 until his death in 1625, a period during which the county sat uncomfortably between French and German political pressures along the Rhine. This thaler was struck just a decade before the Thirty Years' War engulfed the region — Hanau-Lichtenberg would suffer repeated occupation and contribution demands before the conflict ended. The county's Reformed Protestant confession made alliances brittle and enemies plentiful.
Suchier's reference remains the authoritative die study for Hanau-Lichtenberg thalers, and the E&L#49 citation places this squarely within the Engel and Lehr corpus for Alsatian coinage.
