John Philip of Greiffenclau zu Vollraths held the Prince-Bishopric of Würzburg from 1699 until his death in 1719, a tenure that coincided with the War of the Spanish Succession and its considerable fiscal strain on Franconian ecclesiastical territories. Würzburg, as a member of the Franconian Circle, was obligated to contribute troops and funds to the imperial war effort — coinage of this period frequently served the double purpose of ceremonial display and liquidity for military subsidy payments.
Davenport places this issue within the broader German Taler series under GT II#2885, a reference that distinguishes it from the earlier Würzburg episcopal issues catalogued under separate Dav sequences. Helmschrot 502 confirms the type.
