In 1855, King Johann of Saxony made an official visit to the Dresden Mint — a ceremonial occasion for which the mint produced a small number of gold trial strikes of the standard thaler design. These were not intended for circulation but as presentation pieces distributed to dignitaries and officials attending the visit. The .986 fine gold composition and the substantial weight place this firmly outside any practical monetary function.
Schlumberger 990 is rarely encountered; surviving examples number in the single digits by most specialist accounts.
