John I ruled Palatinate-Zweibrücken from 1569 until his death in 1604, and this early issue from 1570 — just one year into his reign — was struck during the precise period when the Reichstaler was being standardized across the Holy Roman Empire following the 1566 Augsburg imperial diet. Zweibrücken's mint output from this decade is sparse, and Dav. 9653 is among the scarcer ducal thalers of the Rhenish Palatinate branch.
