John Gottfried II von Guttenberg ruled the Bishopric of Würzburg from 1684 until his death in 1698, a tenure marked by the slow recovery of Franconia from the devastation of the Thirty Years' War — a conflict that had ended a generation earlier but left the region's economy and population diminished for decades.
