John George II ruled Anhalt-Dessau for over four decades and died in 1693, the same year this memorial thaler was struck. Death thalers — Sterbetaler — were a firmly established German tradition by this point, issued by even minor principalities to mark the passing of their rulers. Anhalt-Dessau was small enough that these issues rarely saw meaningful circulation; they functioned as diplomatic gifts and dynastic keepsakes rather than commercial coin.
