John Gebhard of Mansfeld served as Archbishop of Cologne from 1558 to 1562 — a tenure so brief and administratively turbulent that coinage bearing his name is structurally rare by simple arithmetic. He was elected under pressure from the cathedral chapter and spent much of his episcopate maneuvering between the competing interests of the Habsburgs and the Protestant territorial princes encroaching on ecclesiastical holdings in the Rhineland. The 1558 date places this thaler at the very opening of his reign, likely among the first issues struck under his authority.
Davenport GT I#9121 is a recognized type, but examples turn up infrequently on the market.
