Additional information

John Frederick ruled Calenberg from 1665 until his death in 1679, and these thalers fall squarely within his most politically ambitious years — the period in which he converted to Catholicism in 1651 had long since complicated his standing among Lutheran subjects, yet he remained duke through sheer dynastic maneuvering. His court at Hanover was aggressively cultivated during this period, laying groundwork for the eventual elevation of the Hanoverian line to electoral dignity in 1692, a generation after his death.

The Dav ST#6573 designation places this within the broader Stolberg thaler sequence. Fiala#1974 is the primary collection reference for die attribution on this type.
