John Francis von Eckher zu Kapfing und Lieberg was elected Bishop of Freising in 1696 and ruled the see until 1727, a tenure long enough to leave a modest but coherent coinage record. The 1709 issue falls squarely in the middle of the War of the Spanish Succession, during which Bavaria — and its ecclesiastical territories including Freising — suffered considerably after Elector Max Emanuel backed the losing French side at Blenheim in 1704. Imperial occupation of the region followed, disrupting both civil administration and minting activity.
Freising's output as a minting authority was never prolific, and thalers from this bishopric in any year are genuinely scarce in the market.
