Additional information

John Ernest of Saxe-Weimar died in 1683 after a reign marked by the slow consolidation of a duchy still recovering from the devastation of the Thirty Years' War. Struck as a memorial issue — a Sterbethaler in the German tradition — this piece was produced to commemorate his passing rather than circulate as everyday coinage, which explains the care typically taken with such dies. The Ernestine branch of the Wettin dynasty had fragmented repeatedly through partition inheritance, and Saxe-Weimar itself had been divided and reunited more than once within living memory of this coin's striking.
