John Albert II ruled Mecklenburg-Güstrow during one of the most disruptive periods in the duchy's history — the Thirty Years' War was already four years old by 1622, and the economic strain was beginning to fracture the German silver coinage system. The Kipper und Wipper crisis, which peaked precisely around this date, saw mints across the Empire debasing currency at a catastrophic rate, making full-weight silver thalers increasingly anomalous and, in practical terms, hoarded rather than spent.
