Obverse description Draped bust of Duke John Albert I facing left, wearing a tall plumed hat with a netted crown band, within a beaded inner circle. The duke is depicted in three-quarter armour with a ruffled collar and chain. The surrounding Latin legend reads: DOMINE. NE. DA. INIMICIS. VER(B)(I). TV(I). LE(T)(I)(T)(I)(AM). — a scriptural invocation meaning 'Lord, give not to the enemies of Thy word cause for rejoicing.' The portrait exhibits the high-relief Renaissance artistic style characteristic of mid-16th century German hammered coinage.
